Young’s Point, ON to Buckhorn, ON

Miles Traveled 15.6
Total Miles Traveled 5345
Day 315

After our first lock today, we started to see a change in scenery.

When crossing Clear Lake and Stony Lake, we saw several nice houses along the shore and on islands.

After twisting and turning through a narrow channel known as Hell’s Gate, one of the islands we passed was Church Island, home of St. Peter’s on the Rock Church.  Opening in 1914, it is said that most of the 225 seats are filled each Sunday during the summer; the church is closed during the winter.

We experienced another first today, after locking through 3 locks, we entered our fourth lock at Buckhorn, lock #31.  We intended to stay on the top lock wall for the night and asked the lockmaster if there was room, he said it was full at the time, maybe “ice creamers” (boaters that come to Buckhorn for ice cream and leave).  He asked if we wanted to back out of the lock and tie to the lower wall and wait for an opening on the top.  He opened lower doors and we backed out, sure enough after one cycle of the lock, we were able to lock through and tie to the top wall.  Some of the locks have power, and all of them have very nice indoor restrooms.

Buckhorn Ontario has a hardware store, grocery, bakery, restaurants, general store, and pharmacy, all within walking distance from the lock.
