Day 295

Today is Canada Day, the national day of Canada celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867 enactment of the Constitution Act 1867, which united four colonies into a single country.  We are fortunate to be in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, during this country’s national celebration.  Ottawa has been a great city to visit.  The city is the most educated in Canada, and it is home to a number of post-secondary, research, and cultural institutions, including the National Arts Centre and the National Gallery.  Ottawa also has the highest standard of living in the nation and low unemployment.  It ranks 2nd out of 150 worldwide.

We left early this morning to watch the changing of the guard ceremony on Parliament Hill.  Before entering the courtyard, we had to empty our pockets and pass through a security check.  The courtyard was lined with hundreds of people, so getting a close look at the ceremony was next to impossible.  It was an interesting ceremony with a marching band and representation from the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force.

We visited the National Art Gallery housed in a glass and granite building with a view of Parliament Hill in the distance.  The gallery is three stories tall and has a large and varied collection of paintings, drawings, sculpture and photographs.  I wouldn’t scratch the surface of someone that knows anything about art, but I did recognize a few names in the gallery:  Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, and Warhol.

The city was bustling with people today…..everyone was polite, friendly, and having a good time.

This couple was cruising up and down the canal waving the flag and honking their horn.

When crossing the bridge this morning we noticed they drained the locks.  We hope the last lock gate holds, we are upstream of the empty ones.
