Day 246
We walked into town this morning to a local restaurant for
breakfast; we passed this antebellum house on the way. Antebellum architecture (meaning “prewar”,
from the Latin ante, “before”, and bellum, “war”) is an architectural style characteristic
of the 19th century, especially in the Deep South. We have seen a lot of these houses on our
travels starting in Mississippi.
After breakfast we walked to the local art gallery, and
then visited the Albemarle museum. The
Albemarle Region surrounds one of the world’s largest freshwater sounds and is
named for George Monck, an English general who aided Charles II in reclaiming
the British throne. In exchange for this
service, King Charles Bestowed on Monck the title of “Duke of the Albemarle”
and granted him the land of Carolina—North and South Carolina and lower
Virginia. The museum’s second floor has a 6,200 square foot exhibit of over 700
artifacts that depict the story of the Albemarle regions watermen, farmers,
lifesavers, and soldiers.
I thought this iron chest was pretty cool.
This is a closer look at the locking mechanism.
