Marineland, Fl Day 2

Miles Traveled 0
Total Miles Traveled 2752
Day 209

Today we explored the St. Augustine area and our first stop was the lighthouse.  The St. Augustine Light Station is an active lighthouse, built in 1874.  The lighthouse stands 165 feet above sea level and is St. Augustine’s oldest surviving brick structure.

Our next stop was the Alligator Farm Zoological Park, founded in 1893 and one of the oldest zoos in the country.   The zoo has a diverse collection of birds, mammals and reptiles.

The park has several albino alligators.

We arrived at the alligator swamp just before feeding time.

We were hoping the walkway would hold all of the spectators, if it failed it would not be a pretty site.

Our last stop was downtown St. Augustine, founded in 1565 and served as a Spanish military outpost.   St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European established settlement within the borders of the United States.  We walked along St. George Street, a pedestrian only thoroughfare where no cars are allowed, lined with shops, restaurants and historic buildings.

This picture was taken in front of Rodriguez-Avero-Sanchez house built in 1762, looking down St George Street.
