Cumberland Island, Ga to Brunswick, Ga

Miles Traveled 37.9
Total Miles Traveled 3198
Day 225

We left Cumberland Island at daybreak this morning, trying to take advantage of high tide when passing Jekyll Island on the ICW, there have been numerous reports of shoaling within the channel around the island.  We had a full moon when we left our anchorage.

Most of our cruise today was through vast areas of salt marsh.  Salt marshes are coastal wetlands which are flooded and drained by tides.  They are marshy because the soil may be composed of deep mud and peat.

Before reaching Jekyll Island we had to turn out toward the Atlantic Ocean in St Andrews Sound to avoid shallow water, we passed this cruise liner as we were heading for open water.

I would have taken pictures of the ocean, but when we passed the protection of Little Cumberland Island we had big swells rolling inland, wind, and tidal current.  Both hands on the wheel and feet planted firmly on deck!

We passed by Jekyll Island without a problem and turned north toward Brunswick, Ga.  Brunswick has been a port city since the 1700’s and continues its commercial heritage.  Besides the cargo and shrimp traffic, the J.A. Jones Company built 99 Liberty Ships in three years during World War II.  The shipyard set an unbroken record in December 1944 by constructing seven ships in one month.

We passed this tanker on the way to the Brunswick Landing Marina; the marina must have a direct line to the fuel supply, today’s diesel price was $1.75 per gallon…..filler up!!

We came to this marina today because of potential thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight.  We arrived here around noon and the thunderstorms rolled through about 5.
