Six Mile Creek, Wilson Lake, AL to Riverwalk Marina, Decatur, AL

Miles Traveled 36.6
Total Miles Traveled 292
Day 8

Underway at 8:58 but discovered two tows ahead of us before Joe Wheeler Lock, I checked their speed and figured we could get ahead of the second one but the first one would beat us to the lock.  Turns out the first one is the same tow we waited on at Wilson Lock yesterday.  I checked a website that monitors locks and found the main chamber at Joe Wheeler lock was out of service.  After passing the second tow, we called the lock master and were instructed to wait on the main chamber wall.  It would be 2 to 3 hours before he could get us through. At least we were locking ahead of the second tow.

                                                                                      1st Tow

                                                                      Second tow

We passed Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant near Decatur, AL.   Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant is on the north shore of Wheeler Reservoir in north Alabama. It was TVA’s first nuclear power plant and the largest in the world when it began operation in 1974. It was the first nuclear plant in the world to generate more than 1 billion watts of power.

We’re not sure what this is on top of the stack?

After passing the power plant I completed my routine engine room checks and found one of our primary fuel filters was indicating service.  There are two primary filters and only one is in service at a time.  I switched to the second filter.  Since we were two miles from a marina, we decided to get a slip for the night and change out the first filter in the morning when the engine room has cooled.

Although were had a least a mile of water on both sides of the boat, this tree root ball was floating in front of us.......you always have to be watching in front of you.

We pulled into a slip at Riverwalk Marina across the river from Decatur, AL.  They have a restaurant "Hard Dock Cafe" looking out over the river, so we ate Cajun tonight, with a couple of cold ones.

I didn’t see this guy at the restaurant, but I’m sure he had a few cold ones too.

Shakoda would like to know when you will get to Florida? Kendra would like to if you will be going by West Virgina? Kamesha wants to know how long it will take to get to Florida? Matthew wants to know how did you get the boat? Adrian would like to know when you will get to the ocean?

Shakoda, we will probably get to Florida around the first of December, after hurricane season. Kendra, we won't be going by West Virginia, but will be going by Virginia. Kamesha, we will be leaving Alabama in October and won't get to Florida until December. Matthew, we looked for a long time to find the right boat to do the Great Loop, we found our boat for sale in Kentucky. Adrian, we will be going up the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in mid February next year.
