Day 6

A short day of cruising today, we had a great anchorage at Dry Creek, but it’s time to get fuel, water, and supplies for the next leg of our adventure.  While only traveling 6 miles, we crossed 3 states, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.  The marina is located just south of the Tennessee boarder in Mississippi.  We topped off our fuel tanks when we arrived at Grand Harbor Marina, then secured the boat in our transient slip for today and tonight.  Grand Harbor Marina is located on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and is the river system we will take when continuing the loop, but we are going to take a side trip to Chattanooga, TN first.

The marina offered us a courtesy car to use today so we decided to visit Shiloh National Military Park.  Shiloh National Park at Pittsburg Landing was the site of a bloody Civil War Battle in April, 1862.  Nearly 100,000 American troops clashed in a bloody conflict that resulted in 23,746 casualties:  more casualties than all of America’s previous wars combined.

We arrived at the visitor’s center just before the 30 minute film started documenting the events of this fierce battle.  After the film, we visited the museum, then drove around the park following a map that highlights troop movements of the armies before and during the two-day battle.  This was a very interesting and moving day for us.

The Tennessee River is in the background, this is Pittsburg Landing where reinforcments arrived to assist Ulysses S. Grant

On the way back to the marina we stopped for groceries.  Moni headed for the laundry room and I topped off the water tanks.  “Moni Jean” is setting pretty low with full tanks and groceries.
