Day 219
We’re glad we chose to stay here for a few days, we had
storms all around us and today wind gusts around 30 mph. We have pretty much wiped out our to-do list during
our stay and have enjoyed visiting the town during our daily walks.
Walaka is an old river town that was mostly dependent on
fish camps and supporting businesses along the river. Today, almost all of the buildings along the
river are closed and boarded up, and several homes and businesses that we have
seen in town are also sitting empty.
Bryant’s Wharf is the city dock, with a city park
just a short walk up the hill—yes I said hill, the elevation of Walaka is 28
feet above sea level.
And there are tree’s over 15 feet tall too! The town is full of Water Oak trees, a member
of the red oak group with a rounded open canopy, growing up to 100 feet tall, and
a trunk diameter of 3 feet. It’s pretty
cool walking through town shaded by these massive trees with Spanish moss hanging
on them.
We are on the east side of the river, so the hill and the
trees blocked most of the North East winds giving us a peaceful stay on the St.
Johns River.
There are two places in town that do draw people in from the
outlying areas. Shrimp R US and More have
great dinners, but also serve breakfast, both at very reasonable prices.
Hawg Wash BBQ has the best barbecue ribs I have had for a
long time. The walls inside are covered
with trophies and ribbons they have won participating in barbecue contest
around the country.

Beware of the Shrimps are Us and more. Unsavory characters running the place. Especially the kitchen.
