Day 359
We were only a few miles from the Marseilles Lock and
received word that we could lock through at 8:30 this morning, if we were there
waiting. The problem with this lock is a
long narrow channel cuts around the dam to the lock and there is no place to
anchor while waiting. When we arrived at
the lock, a tow was in the chamber coming up and another was waiting to lock
down and there were 8 recreational boats waiting to lock down. When the up bound tow came out of the lock,
he pulled out far enough for the 8 of us to squeeze behind him and into the
lock.
This boat locked through with us….it is not a looper.
And when we exited the lock, he didn’t waste any time
trying to get to the next lock before we did.

Jet Stream
There has been a lot of barge traffic and what appears to
be new or expanded refineries and grain elevators along the river.
Northern Illinois received heavy rain last week and the
Illinois River is at flood stage. The
good news is we pick up 1-2 miles an hour with the current, but the bad news is
we have to watch for debris.
We really enjoy the inland rivers, of all of the miles we
have traveled on our adventure, the inland rivers and lakes will always be a
highlight.
We saw eagles today, and even caught a strong odor of a skunk…..it’s been a year since we’ve had that experience.
