Kingfisher Bay Marina to Bashi Creek Anchorage, AL

November 2-3, 2015
Monday, Tuesday
Miles Traveled 71.6
Total Miles Traveled 1043
Day 54, 55

During routine checks Monday, I noticed a small amount of diesel fuel in the engine bilge, a fuel hose connecting the fuel pump to the secondary fuel filter had a small leak.  The hose is steel braid covered with a rubber jacket and blisters had formed on the outer jacket indicating the internal braid was leaking.  I contacted the marina boat service and found that a local shop in town fabricated fuel hoses so we replaced the inlet and outlet fuel filter hoses.

The hoses were not finished by Monday evening, so we had to wait until Tuesday morning before getting underway to our next anchorage, 71 miles and one lock away.  We called the Demopolis lock and found one tow was in the lock chamber coming upstream and one tow was coming up behind us to lock through downstream.  The lockmaster informed us that he would lock us through with tow.  Another pleasure craft arrived while waiting for the tow to secure in the lock so the three of us locked through together.

This is the view after leaving the Demopolis lock.

Several miles downstream, we passed the old US Highway 80 Rooster Bridge, this was the bridge where the tugboat Cahaba was capsized and pushed under during a flood in April 1979, and popped back up on the other side of the bridge.  Google “Rooster, Cahaba, Tombigbee” to see the actual photos and story of this amazing event.  Today there are two fixed bridges 121 feet above the water replacing the old Rooster Bridge.

We arrived at Bashi Creek to find 8 other boats anchored in the very narrow creek.  Luckily “Firebird” saved us a spot allowing us to raft up to him for the night. We had to squeeze past the four boats in the picture to get to “Firebird”.
