Day 57
There were five boats tied to the dock last night, we were rafted 3 deep, so we had to walk across two boats to get to the dock. There were also two sailboats anchored upstream of the dock. We really enjoyed our stay, contrary to some of the rumors we had heard about high fees and rickety docks. The boats at Bobby’s ranged from a 22 foot C-Dory to 50+ foot motor yachts. Everyone was very friendly and helped each other fueling the boats and securing them for the night.
This morning all 7 of us left the dock together and locked through the Coffeeville Lock. All of the boats cruise around 20 mph, except for the sailboats, so we will be traveling alone today. It was foggy again, but it didn’t take long to burn off. We spotted this juvenile eagle looking for breakfast; it’s hard to get close enough to get a good picture.
We tried to get a picture of the crane operator scooping
coal from the barge, but it didn’t move as we passed.
This cliff was really interesting, the top was red dirt,
the middle was white sand, and the bottom was green rock. There must have been some copper minerals in
the rock.
Here we go again, meeting ourselves coming and going.
This is our anchorage at 3 Rivers Lake; it’s a narrow
channel off of the river going back to a lake.
We dropped the dingy about an hour before dark. We went about a mile up the narrow channel
to the lake looking for wildlife, and tried to catch a fish or two, yes Moni
caught 3, and I caught zip.
We thought we were miles from anyone and just sat in the
middle of the channel looking in the woods waiting for something to appear, it
was so quiet and peaceful. Then we had
that ugh oh moment, we could hear a boat motor way off in the distance getting
louder and louder and sure enough here comes three guys in an old riverboat
heading right for us. I paddled to the
side knowing we were a long way from the boat, hoping they would pass. We agreed not to make eye contact as they
slowed down to pass. I waved, they
waved, and they kept going. We heard
them slow down to pass “Moni Jean”, then they sped up again heading for the
river. No, we did not hear banjo music
before the boat motor broke the silence.
