Day 23
This is our second day at Ditto Landing Marina; we rented a car and drove to Huntsville, AL to the US Space and Rocket Center Museum. The center has several military rockets, and rocket engines on display including two F1s, the type of gigantic engine that produced 1,500,000 pounds-force to push Saturn V off the launch pad. It took five F1 rocket engines for the first stage lift off.
The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is the U.S. government's civilian
rocketry
and spacecraft propulsion research center. The
largest NASA
center, MSFC's first mission was developing the Saturn launch vehicles for the Apollo moon
program. Marshall has been the agency's lead center for Space Shuttle
propulsion and its external tank; payloads and related crew
training; International Space Station (ISS) design
and assembly; and computers, networks, and information management. The center
is located on the Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama, MSFC is named in honor of General of the Army George
Marshall.
We really enjoyed the day, especially the hands on interactive exhibits. With one of the exhibits we put on a headband and moved an object by mind control, another one tracked the light reflected by your eye and allowed you to select an object by looking at it, and moving it to another location on a computer screen. I need one of these for the boat so I can look in the direction I want the boat to navigate to.
