Day 173
This is our second day anchored at No Name Harbor. The first thing we noticed this morning was a
390 Mainship, just like ours, coming into the harbor. After breakfast we dropped the dinghy to
explore the harbor and check out the state park. When we went ashore, Gene, the owner of the
Mainship was walking to his boat, it turns out he is a looper from Chicago. We also found out that his boat is one that we
had looked at online when shopping for our boat. Gene joined us on our walk around the park
and we compared notes about our boats and looper experiences.
Located at the south end of Key Biscayne is the Cape
Florida Light House, originally constructed in 1825. Its foundation is brick on a coral reef and
stands 95 feet. The original construction
contract called for a 65 ft tall tower with walls of solid brick, five feet
thick at the bottom tapering to two feet thick at the top. It was later found that the contractor had
scrimped on materials and built hollow walls.
In 1835 a major hurricane struck the island, damaging the lighthouse and
the keeper’s house, and flooding the island under three feet of water.
After exploring the lighthouse and beach, we returned to
the harbor and had lunch at the No Name Harbor Boaters Grill. This is the view from the grill, as you can
see, it’s a popular anchorage. We only
hope that when the wind changes direction, everyone’s boat swings together.
