We stayed at the Gingerville Marina, near Annapolis Maryland, almost the entire month of August. We had several projects to catch up on, and we had the remnants of hurricane Debby pass through our area. Although we did not experience any severe weather, we did have some gusty winds, rain, and a tidal surge that flooded our pier and disrupted our power for a day.
A boat rental business and a rowing club is located at this marina, there is always entertainment passing by our boat. Sometimes they bump the boat with their oar.......I think they just want attention. 😏
We departed the marina August 30th on a rainy but warm morning, and traveled 41 miles to Baltimore, Maryland. Edgewater is about seven miles up the South River from the Chesapeake Bay and it was a quiet, uneventful cruise until we turned north on the bay. There were several ships, most of them anchored, and charter fishing boats, so trying to keep an eye on everyone kept us busy. You would think a big ship wouldn’t be a problem to keep track of, but we run about 8 mph and a ship cruising on the bay runs around 15 mph. If one sneaks up behind you, and they don’t make any noise, so keeping track of all movement is a priority.
The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is a 1 ½ story hexagonal wooden cottage, equipped with a foghorn and light. It is the only screw-pile lighthouse in the bay which stands at its original site. A screw-pile lighthouse stands on cast iron piles that are screwed into sandy or muddy sea bottoms. In 1964 it was the last manned light in the Chesapeake Bay. Tours of the historic lighthouse depart from Annapolis.
On March 26th this year, three spans of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the ship channel to the Baltimore Harbor, collapsed into the river after being struck by the ship Dali. The ship experienced several power failures before striking the bridge. Fortunately the proper emergency protocols were followed, and the bridge was closed to traffic before the impact. Sadly, six members of a maintenance crew working on the roadway were killed, but two others were rescued. All the debris have been removed and the channel is open.
Baltimore
We arrived at the Anchorage Marina in the Baltimore harbor. The marina is located on the Baltimore Waterfront Prominade, a 7.5-mile walkway connecting people to the Inner Harbor and other points of interest. This is a nice marina with floating docks, security gates, and unlimited access to shops and restaurants. Our friends Rick and Christi on m/v Inked Mermaid have been here for several weeks. We will be here for one week and attend the marina Labor Day party, and see the sights of the city.
Walking back to the marina on the Waterfront Promenade.
Saturday farmers market was very busy.
Cool ship restaurant
This trash wheel in a manned unit and travels the bay collecting trash.
After a week in Baltimore, we'll continue north to a visit a few more places before heading back south later this month.
