Total Miles Traveled 379

On June 27th, we departed Nu Plaza marina at Evansville, IN and traveled 40 miles to Owensboro, KY. Our friends on m/v Chasing 80 stayed at the Inland Marina in Evansville and caught up with us a few miles from town. We tied up to what used to be an old lock wall at Owensboro which gave us access to town.
The next morning, we traveled 55 miles to an anchorage at Sinking Creek near Stephensport, KY. This is a narrow creek with barely enough room to turn the boat around. Chasing 80 went in about a quarter mile and set their anchor. We came in and turned our boat around, dropped our anchor, and tied up stern to stern to hold us in the middle to avoid drifting into the shore. The temperatures have been in the low 90’s so we had a great afternoon swimming.
On June 29th we traveled 38 miles to our next anchorage at Blue River. This is another narrow creek that flows into the Ohio River. This time we went in first, about a quarter mile or so, and set our anchor, then Chasing 80 tied stern to stern as the previous day. The water in this creek was much clearer and an afternoon swim was very refreshing.
The next day we traveled 61 mi to Louisville, KY. The McAlpine lock has two chambers but one of
them was out of service. We had 3 tows
in front of us to lock up, and 3 tows waiting to drop down and a thunderstorm
was approaching. I called the lockmaster
when we were 30 minutes from the lock and was told it would be a couple of hours
before they could lock us through. We
reduced speed and slowly worked our way up the river. We experienced some pretty good downpours but
no lightning and high winds to deal with.
We were very lucky to get through with only a two-hour delay as they put
us through before the 3 tows waiting to come down.
Louisville
We had reservations at the River Park Marina near
downtown Louisville but was surprised with the condition of the facility. With the 4th of July weekend approaching,
the marina is basically empty due to shallow water inside the marina. Thankfully, we were on the end of a pier with
plenty of water but Chasing 80 was assigned an inside slip and a boat was in
their slip. The dockmaster was on
vacation and there is not a marina office here.
They attempted to go into the next slip but got stuck in the mud halfway
in. The dockmaster was in Texas and
finally returned a call and said someone would be here in an hour our so to help. We were able to get Chasing 80 in the correct
slip, but they still only had less than a foot of water under their boat.
Our kids and grandkids are only a couple of hours drive
to Louisville, so they came down to celebrate Independence Day with us. Our granddaughter Sophie’s birthday is July 3rd,
and grandson Jayden’s birthday is the 7th, so we had a lot to
celebrate this week!
