The wind finally laid down long enough for us to leave
West End and cruise 56 miles across Little Bahama Bank to an anchorage at Great
Sale Cay. I threw a line out while underway in hopes to catch diner, but no
luck. I did have a steel leader, but
with my 8 pound test tackle, if I caught anything I probably wouldn’t get it in
the boat. We only saw a couple of
dolphins all day.
We are still traveling with friends we met at St Lucie
Lock “The Lower Place” and “Rascal’s Retreat”, we have had a lot of fun
exploring the Bahamas with them. Three other boats
left West End at the same time and hailed us on the radio as the three amigos.
Rascal's Retreat
The Lower Place
We cruised 51 miles from Great Sale Cay to Crab Cay but
didn’t see any crabs. The beach was a
mix of coral and sand, and the south west wind made for a bumpy night on the
hook.
We did have a spectacular sunset though.
After leaving our anchorage, we cruised about 8 miles to
Powell Cay in the Sea of Abaco; the reviews I read indicated the island had
three great beaches and a good shelling.
We anchored and dropped the dinghy in the water but the wind picked up
creating 2-3 foot waves so we aborted that plan and continued on to the
protected waters of Green Turtle Cay. We
are staying at the Bluff House Marina tonight and may continue exploring the
Abacos tomorrow if weather permits.
